Happy Friday!

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic week, and found some great new reads!

I'm still in my book rut and I can't really get into any new books at the moment, so I've been going back to old favourites, namely books by Teresa Medeiros, and rediscovered some fantastic gems. Honestly, if you haven't read her books yet, you NEED too. She was one of the first romance authors I discovered, and her books made me believe in love. If you need something that inspires you, and leaves you in nothing but happiness, honestly, pick up her books.

But, to what you've seen this week! I read an excerpt from Helena Hunting's Meet Cute back in December, and had to read the full book based on that, and came out with very mixed emotions. While I absolutely loved the book, I'll confess that tears were shed as the plot of this story had some tragic undertones that did bring down the mood. While an honestly fantastic, well-written read, I just know that I did struggle with those themes. There's also Sabrina Jeffries first in her School for Heiresses series, Never Seduce A Scoundrel, which was a great historical read. Click on the book covers below to be taken to the reviews.

Meet Cute by Helena Hunting       Never Seduce A Scoundrel (School for Heiresses Book 1) by Sabrina Jeffries

As mentioned early in the week, unfortunately I did flare up on old writing injury in my left hand, causing some amount of pain when typing so posts have been a little bit shorter from me this week, but hopefully with time to rest, it should be back to normal soon. On the other hand though (ha), I have spent some great time reading, which was greatly appreciated.

As we're coming up to the weekend and I think we all need some cheering up, all printables in the store are now on sale for 50% off, including the reading tracker! Pick up yours by clicking the picture below.

Never Seduce A Scoundrel (School for Heiresses Book 1) by Sabrina Jeffries

Never Seduce A Scoundrel (School for Heiresses Book 1) by Sabrina Jeffries
Lady Amelia Plume has many admirers - it's too bad they're all fortune hunters and fops who can't provide the exotic adventures she seeks. But the ballrooms of Mayfair have become much more appealing since the arrival of Major Lucas Winter, an American with a dark past and dangerous air.

Lucas is brash, arrogant and scandalously tempting. Every thrilling kiss sparks hotter desire, yet Amelie suspects that Lucas has a hidden motive in wooing her. And she intends to discover it, by any means necessary...

Ms. Jeffries is well-known in the world of romance, but I confess to having never read one of her novels before, but I decided to finally delve in, and was happily surprised.

Unlike most contemporary romance fiction, most historical romance fiction still adheres to third-person writing, something this reader greatly appreciates. Added into that, a great plot, along with a believable build between our hero and heroine, makes this a fantastic first novel of her series, School for Heiresses.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel as it has the simple characteristics of a romance novel that make it so great: a strong hero and heroine that have fleshed out characteristics that make us fall in love, a great romance, a build, and adventure - something that sometimes contemporary romance novels forget. I don't always enjoy historical romance novels, but Ms. Jeffries really hits the nail with this novel, providing strong characters who you do root for. Overall, a great first start to the series!

(ARC) Meet Cute - Helena Hunting

Kailyn Flowers was always calm, rational, and controlled-until she ended up sprawled all over Daxton Hughes, the former actor she totally crushed on as a teenager. Then she did the unthinkable: She became a mortifying fangirl in five seconds flat, which may or may not have included professing her undying love. And oddly, he didn’t run away. In fact, their meet cute led to a friendship she never saw coming. Of course, she never saw his betrayal coming, either…
Now Dax needs her help. As guardian to his thirteen-year-old sister, he’s in way over his head. And though Kailyn hasn’t forgiven Dax, she isn’t heartless enough to make him fend for himself, either. Soon their friendly meetings turn into flirty dinner dates, and Kailyn can feel their chemistry is as explosive as ever. But how can she possibly let down her guard again to a guy who has heartbreak written all over him?

While this book has already been published, I was fortunate enough to receive an extended free preview, and I can definitely say I'll be purchasing the full version. Having never read anything by Ms. Hunting, I was drawn in by a great blurb and front cover, and was instantly hooked.

While the story should always be the main feature of any novel, there are also factors that affect your enjoyment of the book, with one of the biggest being formatting. Formatting can make or break a novel, affecting the flow and reader's enjoyment. The formatting of this ebook was smooth and a fantastic flow, causing me to read all of it in one sitting. As soon as I was finished the book, I searched for it on scribd to continue, and while unfortunately not available, I will be searching for it nearby.

To the story itself, I instantly was drawn to both the hero and heroine, both written in an engaging and human way. Without giving too much away, I was slightly discouraged by the continued meet-cute with death bringing our leads together, which seems to be quite common across the romance theme, and something not entirely necessary to bring our leads together. However, for the sake of this plot line, it was needed.

In the short 40 page preview I was given, there was comedy, romance, and drama and I simply can't wait to read more.

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend and read some great books.

We're almost officially in August! I'm turning 30 this month (8th August), so this is a bit of a milestone birthday for me. Not quite the one that I'd imagined, but, I think that's the same for a lot of people at the moment. I'll also confess that I've restarted an old hand injury, so typing this week for me will be slow, so expect posts to potentially unfortunately be a little less this week!

I'm still stuck in a bit of a book rut at the moment and I really can't get into a new book. I've turned to one of my all-time favourite authors, Teresa Medeiros, and having a re-read of Nobody's Darling. Does anyone have any recommendations of great books they've been reading lately?

Having said that, I am reading some new books that are coming out next month (one of them below), and those reviews should be with you this week (if not next, depending on how fast I finish Nobody's Darling!).

The Dating Itinerary by Brooke Williams
As if it wasn’t bad enough to be deemed the “most single person” at her magazine’s office, budding reporter Penny has now been tapped to write a series of features called “The Dating Game.” From speed dating to Tinder, old-fashioned matchmakers to up-and-coming “dark dating,” Penny now has to go on a lot of dates. Silver lining: meeting new people should be fun, right? But running into her old rival, George, at her first dating event is decidedly not. Not only does the arrogant know-it-all have zero trouble attracting women, wherever Penny goes, somehow he just. Keeps. Showing. Up.

Saturday Night Film Night

Who doesn't need a night of just pure happiness? For me, books and films are about escaping into a happy reality. When I'm in the right mood, I do love historical and action films, but a lot of the time recently, I just need something to just make me happy, and that's why this week, I'm watching the Princess Diaries.

The Princess Diaries

Mia Thermopolis has just found out that she is the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia. With her friends Lilly and Michael Moscovitz in tow, she tries to navigate through the rest of her sixteenth year.

I still remember the day that my friend showed me the Princess Diaries series, somewhere at the tender age of 11. I immediately fell in love and continued eagerly reading and awaiting the rest of the series, and reading the rest of Ms. Cabot's works. So you can imagine my joy when this was turned into a film! And then another one came out!

The film doesn't follow the books, something which is actually hilariously addressed in the books by Ms. Cabot, but that doesn't make it any less perfect. Also, you have Chris Pine and Julie Andrews. So, I don't see how they can be anything less than perfect! I have read that there will also be a third film releasing at some point, I'm not sure the full accuracy to this (I've been awaiting the announcement of National Treasure 3 for over 8 years now...), but I'm crossing my fingers!

Honestly, the book series itself is my favourite book series of all time (no exaggeration), and the films are just the perfect cherry on top!

What are you watching this weekend?

Happy Friday!

We've made it to another Friday! We're officially over halfway done the year now, I don't know how on earth that's happened.

I started out the week letting you know that I was lucky enough to receive an advanced review copy of best-selling romance author Avery Flynn's newest upcoming novel, The Wedding Date Disaster, along with finally finishing designing a book review tracker! The book review tracker has been in the works for some times, as while I do love computers, there's nothing like having it physically in front of you.

If you haven't checked out my reviews this week, click on the picture below to be taken to them:

The Wedding Date Disaster by Avery Flynn       Boy Meets Girl by Meg Cabot

The Author Spotlight this week was on Teresa Medeiros, one of my all-time favourite best-selling romance authors. If you haven't checked it out yet, click here to find out my favourite books from her, and some great new historical romance reads!

Next week I'm continuing to delve back into my old and loved favourites. I'm still finding it hard to actually get into a new series/author/book at the moment - does anyone have any recommendations?

Happy Friday!

Boy Meets Girl by Meg Cabot

Boy Meets Girl by Meg Cabot
Meet Kate MacKenzie…idealistic office worker, reluctant deliverer of termination notices and queen of instant messaging. As sweet as sugar. Meet Mitch Hertzog…ever-smiling corporate lawyer, defender of the downtrodden and king of aborted dinner dates. Good enough to eat.

Meet Ida Lopez…cake, cookie and pastry-maker extraordinaire, purveyor of the dessert trolley and goddess of all things mouth-wateringly yummy. As nice as pie.

Together they must battle tyrants and despots to find truth, justice and the perfect double fudge pudding.

I've been a big fan of Ms. Cabot's work since I picked up the Princess Diaries, but for me, this is the book that truly launched her adult romantic fiction works. I have literally never laughed this hard at a book, and will admit that I have re-read this novel a few times, due to the sheer hilarity.

Written in one of the most unique formats I've ever seen, this novel is written entirely through emails from each of the characters, a few diary entries, and notes scribbled to each other, but is one of the most comprehensive novels I've read, and you can truly see our hero and heroine falling in love. If nothing else, read this book simply because of it's writing format!

There just truly aren't enough good things to say about this book. From it's unique writing style, I can say that these characters are truly unlike anything I've ever read and the romance is 100% believable and organic. All of the characters have unique characteristics and truly fleshed out, and a pleasure to read.

Overall, hands down, one of the best books I've ever read, and certainly a favourite.

Author Spotlight: Teresa Medeiros

Welcome to another Author Spotlight! This week I'm going back to one of my first romance authors and one who I will keep going back to over and over, Teresa Medeiros.

I can honestly say that I've read her books over and over. Despite knowing the ending, there's just something so romantic, spell-binding and uplifting about her books that just keep me coming back. While mainly writing historical romance, she did delve into some contemporary modern romance that I'll confess (and it broke my heart) that couldn't keep my interest, but her older novels are just simply magical.

It's impossible for me to choose my favourite novel by her, so instead, you get three (and I'll admit, I agonized over these three as her novels are just phenomenal *chef's kiss*)!

A Whisper Of Roses

A Whisper of Roses (Highland Hearts Series Book 3) by Teresa Medeiros
Can a spirited beauty tame a Highland beast?

Born into both affluence and adoration, Sabrina Cameron, the "princess" of Clan Cameron has never met a soul she couldn't charm—until she comes face to face with Morgan MacDonnell, the son of her father's lifelong enemy.

As adults, they are thrown together to end the bloody feud between their families. Morgan spirits the delicate rose of a girl away to his rugged castle, never suspecting that his own surrender will be the sweetest victory of all.

Yours Until Dawn

Yours Until Dawn by Teresa Medeiros
Gabriel Fairchild's valor during the Battle of Trafalgar earns him the title of hero, but costs him his hope for the future. Abandoned by the fiancée he adored, the man who once walked like a prince among London's elite secludes himself in his family's mansion, cursing his way through dark days and darker nights.

Prim nurse Samantha Wickersham arrives at Fairchild Park to find her new charge behaving more like a beast than a man. After their first fiery confrontation, she engages the arrogant earl in a hilarious battle of both wit and wills. Although he pronounces her a "tart, vinegary creature without an ounce of womanly softness about her", he is secretly intrigued by her dry sense of humor, her lack of pity, and the bold way she brooks no nonsense from him. Whenever she is near, he feels the stirrings of a desire he never thought he would feel again.

As Samantha begins to let the light back into Gabriel's life and his heart, they both discover that some pleasures are best explored in the dark.

What are your favourite novels from Ms. Medeiros?

(ARC) The Wedding Date Disaster by Avery Flynn

The Wedding Date Disaster by Avery Flynn
I can’t believe I have to go home to Nebraska for my sister’s wedding. I’m gonna need a wingman and a whole lot of vodka for this level of family interaction. At least my bestie agreed he’d man up and help. Too bad he had to catch a different flight than me. Then his plane got delayed. And finally—because bad things always happen in threes—instead of my best friend, his evil twin strolls out of the airport.

If you looked up doesn’t-deserve-to-be-that-confident, way-too-hot-for-his-own-good billionaire in the dictionary, you’d find a picture of Will Holt. He’s awful. Horrible. The worst—even if his butt looks phenomenal in those jeans.

Ten times worse? My buffer was supposed to be there to keep me away from the million and one family events. But Satan’s spawn just grins and signs us up for every. Single. Thing.

Fine. “Cutthroat” Scrabble? I’m in. I can’t wait to take this guy down a notch.

But somewhere between Pictionary and the teasing glint in his eyes, our bickering starts to feel like more than just a game…

Thanks to Ms. Flynn and Entangled Publishing, I was lucky enough to receive an Advanced Review Copy of her upcoming romance novel, The Wedding Date Disaster due out 25th August. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

I fell in love with Ms. Flynn's novels back in her Hartigan series with Tomboy, and then followed her through to her Ice Knight series, and then back through her older novels. While I will say that   Tomboy still remains my firm favourite of all her novels, this one may well be tied for first place, and if not, I will say that without doubt, it's her best novel since Tomboy's release.

The enemies to lovers trope is not new, but, all the elements combined in this novel just made it work so well. One of the things that I love best about her novels is that the secondary characters actually are present and provide substance to the story, they're not just mentioned once and never heard from again. While at its core it still remains a romance novel, there were so many elements of family and friendship added that it just worked beautifully and felt like I was dropped into this new world that was fully planned out.

The romance between our two leads is beautiful, steamy and has its heart-breaking moments at times. I'll confess that there were elements thrown in that I didn't expect, and this just made it even better. Both characters are fully formed and likeable, and you just can't help but cheer for them both.

Spoilers Ahead
I will confess that tears were shed during this book, which doesn't usually happen. It did get somewhat emotional at times, and added in (trigger warning: suicide) was a very sad turn in the story where we learn that our heroine's father committed suicide, having an impact on how her relationships and interactions with  family adjusted. It was beautifully written and emotional, and something not just added in for a shock value, but did have a point in the story.
Spoilers Finished

As mentioned above, I think this is Ms. Flynn's best novel to date since Tomboy, and I will confess that it still remains my permanent favorite number one from her, but I think this one definitely has sneaked up to be joint first. A definite must-read, and the perfect summer romance!

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you're all doing well, had a fantastic weekend, and hopefully read some great books!

The Wedding Date Disaster by Avery FlynnI've got some quite exciting news in that I was lucky enough to receive an Advanced Reading Copy of best-selling romance author (and one of my personal favourites) Avery Flynn's newest upcoming novel, The Wedding Date Disaster (TWDD). This was started at approximately 11:00pm and finished by 3:30am, and yes, I am quite tired! That review will be coming out tomorrow, so make sure to check back here for that.

I've also got an old favourite that I'm excited to share with you all on Thursday, which is also quite possibly my favourite book ever.
I've also had a few discussions with some of my fellow book lovers about how I keep track of all my books. While I do love my digital organization, I do love having my information at a glance, and while it may be slightly old-fashioned, I do absolutely love having it on paper. And thus, the new book review tracker was born!
Book Review Tracker Log
Quite handy for taking notes of your books while reading them, and along with my personal favourite feature - the quotes section. Click on the picture to be taken through to my Etsy store for purchase. PLUS, receive 10% off from coming through my website with the code THANKS10. Give me a shout if you'd like to have any extra features or pages added in!

Once I finished TWDD on Saturday morning however, I was a bit stumped looking for a next book to read. I tried picking up a few but just couldn't fully get absorbed in. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Hope you all have a fantastic week!

Saturday Night Film Night

It's time for another film night! We're trying to save our films for the weekend so that way we actually know it's the weekend, but let me just say for the record, that these films can be watched whenever you want. If I had it my way, they'd constantly be running! But, I've been told (by my parents) that my cat likes to watch the news, so, there we go.

This week's film came out in 1992, and I'll admit to being very late to the party, only seeing this last year in 2019, but it has become a firm favourite.

Strictly Ballroom 1992

A maverick dancer risks his career by performing an unusual routine and sets out to succeed with a new partner.

I'll admit that this film started slow, but it just BUILT. I've always loved dancing films (even though I am in fact, a horrible dancer), and this one was just a slow, subtle build. Our leading lady does have her moments at times when I was a bit confused over decisions and facial expressions, but she really comes into her own midway through the film. And the romance with our male lead, and ok, the male lead by himself? Magical.

Weekly Round-Up

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you've all had a great week, drop us a comment and let us know what made your week!

After a bit of a block on my end, I've got back into my reading groove and read some more fantastic books that I'm excited to share with you. I will say that I'm still going back into my old favourites and re-reading, but, they actually seem to be quite popular with you all. While I do thoroughly enjoy finding new books to read, sometimes you just need the familiarity of an old favourite.

So what have I been reading this week? Well, after a few weeks of lead-up, you've finally seen the book that I've been cheering for, that finally mentions my hometown! I hope you all enjoyed it - let me know if you've read it yet! I've also gone back to an old favourite that had to have a re-read, especially with some of her newer novels reminding me of it. If you haven't read them yet, click on the pictures to be taken to the reviews.

Love Won (Winning At Love Book 1) by Gillian Jones          Appealed (Legal Briefs Series Book 3) by Emma Chase

We also had a new cover and blurb release this week for Tara Sivec's newest novel and newest series, Kiss My Putt, in her new and upcoming Summersweet Island series. Which also perfectly coincided with her being in our Author Spotlight this week, check it out (and my favourite book of hers) by clicking the picture below.

Kiss My Putt (Summersweet Island Book Series 1) by Tara Sivec)

What have you been reading this week? Happy weekend!

Appealed (Legal Brief Series) by Emma Chase

Appealed by Emma Chase
When Brent Mason looks at Kennedy Randolph, he doesn’t see the awkward, sweet girl who grew up next door. He sees a self-assured, stunning woman…who wants to crush the most intimate—and prized—parts of his anatomy beneath the heels of her Louboutins.
When Kennedy looks at Brent, all she sees is the selfish, Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue–worthy teenager who humiliated her in high school in order to join the popular crowd. A crowd that made those years a living hell for her.

But she’s not a lovesick social outcast anymore—she’s a Washington, DC, prosecutor with a long winning streak. Brent is the opposing attorney in her next case, and Kennedy thinks it’s time to put him through a little hell of his own.

But things aren’t exactly working out the way she planned. Brent has his sights set on Kennedy, and every fiery exchange only makes him want her more—and makes her wonder if he’s as passionate in the bedroom as he is in the courtroom. In the end, they may just find themselves in love…or in contempt of court.

While on a long-haul flight from Canada to Australia, scribd recommended this book to me, and having an excessively large amount of time on my hand, I thought why not? And then, I was hooked and quickly worked my way through the rest of Ms. Chase's books.

Written in the first person and switching back and forth between Kennedy and Brent, this novel is satisfying in all senses of the word. A great cast of characters, a satisfying build-up, believable characters and action, romance, comedy, heartbreak and a sweet ending, this book has truly become a firm favourite. Not only is this a strong read the first time, it also stands up to the test of re-reading and keeps the reader hooked, albeit knowing the ending.

Not being a fan of modern romance, I can say from the bottom of my heart that Ms. Chase has become a firm favourite in my mind, and I'm truly excited to see her further novels. A fantastic read!

Author Spotlight: Tara Sivec

Welcome to the first author spotlight! I've read so many new fantastic books that I'm getting a little lost in just which are my favourite books for each genre, so, I've decided to introduce the author spotlight. A post dedicated to sharing some of my new favourite authors with you and my favourite books from them.

I was briefly introduced to Ms. Sivec's novels at the end of last year, picking up the first in her Naughty Princess series, At The Stroke Of Midnight. I'll confess to having never read a romance novel before that included the heroine stripping as her job (not that it matters), it's just a uniquely distinct plot point and feature.

I didn't return back to her novels until I ran into her Hometown Series, reading (as one does), back to front and read the last book first, the first book second, and the second book third. So, a bit out of order, but, I fell in love with her writing style and her characters, and will definitely be looking for more books from her.

One of the things that I absolutely love about her writing is that each character is relatable, and the books are honestly laugh out loud funny. I'm not talking a huh, a chortle, a wheeze, I'm talking full blown laughter. It's been awhile since I've had that from a romance novel, and her books are just utterly enjoyable.

She does have quite a large repertoire already built, and a new series (Summersweet Island) and novel (Kiss My Putt), which sounds fantastic, coming out this month, with the cover release and blurb just released today!

Needing some place to hide, to lick my wounds and figure out what I even want to do with my life once this blows over, I can only think of one place I need to be. Summersweet Island, where everyone treats me like one of their own, and they’ll all be happy to have me home again. Well, except maybe one person. It’s been two years since I last set foot on Summersweet Island or spoke to anyone there. Once my sexy, spunky, former best friend gets over the shock of seeing me again and stops trying to drive a 9-iron into my skull, I can finally let her know I’ve also kind of, sort of always been in love with her... It’s been a lot of years and another lifetime since Dax Trevino was a playboy detective for the Franklin Police Department. He’s been through hell and back, and now he just wants to be left alone, so he can cuddle his otters. When two of his babies are kidnapped in the middle of the night, and Claws and Effect Pet Detectives are called to the rescue, quiet, broody Dax never expects to be tackled and handcuffed by the only woman he ever regretted being a douchebag to all those years ago. Harley Blake has spent her entire life taking care of her accident-prone father with a fondness for dead animals, and her forty-year-old brother who refuses to grow up. The last thing she needs is another complication in her life, and Detective Douchebag is at the top of the list. Dax might not be a cop anymore, and he might have outgrown his one-and-done player status, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to get burned a second time and fall for his charms. The infuriating man already branded a mark on her heart years ago, making sure she’d never forget him. Besides, she has a case to solve for the guy, and this is just business. But the sarcasm starts flying, there are a gaggle of adorable otters who need to be cuddled, a Bandit Von Trash Panda who just wants to play poker, pot brownies, and squirrels dressed for a wedding... at a funeral. Things are heating up—and not just from the small tree fire after the grenade went off—and this man is suddenly simplifying her life instead of making it worse. Harley knows she won’t escape this time without being Otterly Scorched.

Love Won (Winning At Love Book 1) by Gillian Jones

Love Won (Winning At Love Book 1) by Gillian Jones
McCoy Graves: Public Enemy Number One. The crusher of childhood fairy tales.

McCoy Graves is arrogant. A jerk.

McCoy Graves is my brother’s best friend…and my new boss.

Oh, and did I mention, he’s also the love of my life?

’Cause, yeah, there’s that, too.

My name is Eastlyn Hatfield, and this is a story about our feud.

After my Scribd membership ended, and after much debate about whether I should continue with them, or switch to Amazon Kindle Unlimited (you can read part of that here), I decided to give Kindle Unlimited a go. When I started the membership, based on my previous reading history, it showed automated recommended suggestions, and this was one of them, and I thought, why not?

Honestly, I have never been so thrilled with a random choice book. This was quite utterly perfection. I can say with complete honesty that I've never heard of Ms. Jones before, or this book, and I'll confess that I didn’t even read the blurb before starting. It was a random serendipitous moment of, why not just give it a try?

We're instantly thrown into shenanigans that make you laugh out loud between our hero and heroine and right into the story. Interestingly, rather than a back-and-forth between the characters point of view (POV), the book is split into almost half of the heroine's POV, almost half the hero's POV, and then given to them both, and it really works well. The plot moves swiftly and we're introduced to a great side cast of secondary characters that easily set the scene for the next book in the series.

I'm trying to pinpoint exactly what it was which made this book so great, and I honestly can't quite put my finger on it, it was just a perfect blend of everything. Our hero is strong,  charismatic, protective and charming, and while he may slightly toe over the line of being slightly too cocky at points, I see the appeal. Our heroine sometimes has a bit of a too-clumsy complex (if you haven't seen Isn't It Romantic with Rebel Wilson, I strongly encourage you to), but these are just minor flaws. As a whole, the characters are great with minute flaws that just slightly knock on your hold on a second reality factor, but this is extremely limited.

I will also mention that this book is steamy, be prepared. And, I really do have to give it a shout-out that this is the only book that I have ever read that's actually mentioned my hometown and it was absolutely phenomenal. On that note, I will also say that I had to search quite a bit online, but did find out that Ms. Jones is actually Canadian!! To this point, I should explain that I spent 18 years living in Ontario, Canada, and am so proud of my fellow Canadian!

I'm trying to summarize my feelings overall of this book but I think it's summarized best with simply saying this is now one of my new favourites and - go read this book now.

Happy Monday!

Welcome to another week! I hope your Monday's are all fantastic! I will admit, mine is much better now I've seen this:

Cat Quote Printable Instant Download

While it's not a book, it does perfectly describe me! And my cat to be fair.

But, I digress! What's coming up this week?

As mentioned last week, I'm incredible excited to share a book with you this week that actually mentions my hometown, something, that in my (almost) 30 years of reading, I've never seen before.

I've been in a bit of a funky reading mood lately and not really been able to get into any new books, so I've been going back and re-reading some old favourites, especially by one of my original favourite romance authors, Teresa Medeiros. If you haven't read her work yet, GO, GO NOW. They're honestly just absolutely fabulously perfection!

Drop me a line and let me know what you're reading this week!

Saturday Night Film Night

Happy Saturday everyone! I hope your weekends are all fantastic.

I'll confess that the outside world has got to me a bit this week, so I have been a bit more stilted than usual. I've been trying to keep myself busy and occupied, and this week it was just too much business and occupation, and too much real world. So, this weekend I could do with some extra cheering up! And to this end, to one of my favourite films:

In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he'll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.

Another book turned into a movie, I haven't actually read the book by Neil Gaiman, although it is on my to read. I was a late-comer to this film, only discovering it last year (2019), but it became a firm favourite. An enemies-to-lovers romance, magic, romance, people discovering that being who they are is the best thing - it's just fabulous.

The romance is breath-taking, but the plot itself is phenomenal, and each story interweaves perfectly with each other. Comedic, light-hearted but with substance, this is definitely a film to rewatch over and over.

What's your favourite cheer-up film?

Weekly Round-Up

Welcome to another Friday everyone!

It's been another week of change, and this week has been slightly harder for me to find inspiration to write than others, so please excuse any changes in schedule.

I've read some fantastic books lately that I'm really excited to share with you, and on the other, I've read some books recently that I've honestly not even finished as I couldn't comprehend why on other I was reading something so sad in a book that was meant to be happy. Which leads to my question - do you share books that you couldn't finish?

In case you missed it, I continued my exploration of Kindle Unlimited vs Scribd this week, with a little more information here.

And then I may have completely forgotten which day it was, and published my reviews out of order (my apologies), but check out my reviews this week below (click on the picture to go to the review):

Parental Guidance Ice Knights Series Book 1 by Avery Flynn              Number Neighbors by Emma Hart

Next week I'm really excited to be sharing a book that actually mentions my hometown! I will mention at this point that I have lived in three countries, and have citizenship in two, and in one of those (Canada), I've never seen a book ever mention my hometown - so, please cue the excitement!

What are you reading this weekend?

Parental Guidance by Avery Flynn

Parental Guidance by Avery Flynn
All I want is to play hockey on the Ice Knights, instead, I’m in a viral video for all the wrong reasons and my mom—yes, my mom—has taken over my dating apps. Then, when I think it can’t get any worse, the fates deliver Zara Ambrose, a five-feet-nothing redhead with more freckles than inches and who’d rather be anywhere other than on a date with me.

Now a bet with her friends and my PR nightmare have us both stuck in this go-on-five-dates-with-the-same-person hell situation. But if we band together, we can get the whole thing over with and go on with our lives. It’s perfect! No feelings. No future. No fuc— *ahem* fun. No naked fun.

What could go wrong? Nothing—as long as I remember the rules. Don’t notice the way she looks in a dress. Don’t react when she does that little shivery sigh thing whenever we touch. Don’t think about the fact that she’s never had a toe-curling orgasm that wasn’t self-delivered and just how badly I want to change that.

Five dates—that’s it—and then we go our separate ways. At least, that was the plan...

I'll confess that at the moment I'm on a bit of an Avery Flynn kick, I just can't put them down! This was no exception, started, and finished, the same day.

One of the things that I love most about Ms. Flynn's novels is the ease at which the novel sweeps you in. A rarity in today's modern romantic comedy novels, this series is written from the third person, something this reader thoroughly enjoys and appreciates. More than that though, she really builds her secondary cast, not just focusing on the main characters, resulting in a well-rounded novel, and I'll be honest, keeps me hooked for wanting to read further books in the series.

The romance itself is hot, steamy, believable, and something that I would definitely be happy for. Both our hero and heroine are loveable characters and the romance progression is done extremely well. As mentioned earlier, the supporting cast is phenomenal and I love the links between her series, and definitely can't wait for the next instalment.

Number Neighbors by Emma Hart

Number Neighbours by Emma Hart
BAD IDEA #241: Sending a dirty text to your number neighbor.

In my defense, my friends did it too, and their neighbors took it as the joke it was. Mine didn’t.
He responded with a dirty text of his own. Next thing I know, I have a standing texting date every night at ten-thirty.

Until I have to miss it because the stray kitten who adopted me one week ago is sick. The only person I know who can help me at this time of night is my British next-door neighbor and local vet, Isaac Cooper. I’ll keep him overnight, he says. Here’s my number to call me in the morning, he says.

The problem? I know that number. Because I’ve been texting it every night for the last four days...

This blurb wouldn't have even been a premise a couple of decades ago, and I just had to read it. I've picked up one of Ms. Hart's books before and found it enjoyable, and put some of her series on my to read shelf, and finally managed to pick this one up again.

One of the things that I find most enjoyable about Ms. Hart's novels is the realism that she brings to her books. Bodily functions after romantic times? They're acknowledged. Awkward situations? Very acknowledged. Family members behaving in an interesting fashion? Definitely acknowledged. Her brand of romance acknowledges the reality of what would most likely happen to many of us in a romantic situation, but still gives it that romantic shine to make it a believable romance.

As mentioned earlier, this is definitely a unique plot that's not really widely utilised, and one that was quite interesting to read. I can honestly say that if I found out the person I was sexting with was my next door neighbor that I'd be chucking away the SIM and feigning complete ignorance. I was a little disappointed with our hero, and found him a bit too forceful for my liking. While he definitely had his redeeming qualities, I just felt that there was that special something missing to make me really like him. I found there was a lot of interaction with the side characters and detail about our heroine's newly acquired cat, but I would have liked a bit more detail about the romance between our two leads. The steamy atmosphere was quickly established, but I'd have liked a bit more romantic information to have been given.

It may sound a bit odd, but I think the best comparison I can make for this novel is it was like fast food. You know how sometimes you're just really craving fast food? It's good, it looks delicious, it's easy and fast to make, and when it's over you're happy you had it but you just wanted a little bit more of it? That's how I felt with this novel. It was great, it had a lot of what I was looking for and it satisfied most of what I wanted, but I was left just wanting that little bit more.

Overall, an interesting premise with a good plot.
